On Monday, some of us met to gently kick off the “Our Creative Center” community Summer Reading Program.
This group is a loose-knit community (creatives/introverts reading together separately!) aimed at encouraging us to spend more time with books.
“I like this idea of celebrating reading.” ~Colette
I put forward the idea of creating a way to track your reading in a light-hearted and fun way.
“I think I’ll make an artsy chart.” ~Peg
“I’m thinking about a poster of a bookshelf that I can color in as I read.” ~Sand
We talked about “artist’s dates” to get some supplies—I bought these stamps at my local “Basement Bargains” thrift store.
And of course we talked about the “Book Report” approach. Big Magic (see full list below) won the top seed and I will write a bit about it each week, but for the purpose of our reading adventure, any book that calls to you is worthy of spending some time with.
Additional books that were brought up:
Lessons from the Bard by Lisa Dickson ~Dick’s recommendation
The Doll House by Fiona Davis ~ mentioned by Peg
Making Comics by Linda Barry ~ Sandy has added this to her summer list
We have a baker’s dozen (13) of weeks ahead in our “Summer Reading Program.” How do you see yourself keeping reading at your fingertips and giving yourself happy, effortless, and fun pats on the back? Comment with thoughts and ideas—let’s cheer each other on!
Happy Reading😺,
Kat
The Core “Bookshelf” ~ Feel free to add your own!
While I had only requested top choices, many people (including me) had more than one favorite. Here are the results of people’s summer reading wish lists in Ranked Order:
Big Magic garnered the most 1st place votes (4), with one 2nd place vote.
The Courage to Create received three first-place votes and three second-place votes.

3. Steal Like an Artist came in third with three first-place votes and no other mentions.
Democracy Rising received one first-place vote and one second-choice vote.

Additionally, two other books of interest were mentioned:
The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell.
The Accidental Creative by Todd Henry.
So Big Magic will take the main stage for this Summer Reading program, but will be joined by a chorus of other good books.
We’ll meet online on Monday, June 16 to kick off our laid-back reading time, and on Monday, September 15 to wrap it up.
Please share with any like-minded kindred spirits.
Also, remember these other fun dates:
June 22, 4-5:15 pm ET | Solstice Tarot Writing with Amanda Wilson!
Monday, June 30, 7-8:15 pm ET | June Monthly Review.
