What is reading, if not listening? It takes time—and courage—to pause and listen.

Big Magic begins with a section on courage, and for good reason. Even in times not as daunting as ours, it took courage to live. And now, with all that’s going on, it is okay to recognize that it is a herculean effort to muster the courage to sit quietly and immerse ourselves in books.

There’s a reason that books are one of the first things to be banned in a tyrannical atmosphere: they contain untold power. And it’s not just the information in them, I believe, but the act of a person cultivating a reader’s thoughtfulness.

So this weekend, have courage! Take time to sip your beverage of choice, dive deep into words, sentences, ideas . . . and share what happens.
